Day Trips from Boise to Take this Fall

As kids are preparing to return to classrooms and with the uncertainty of fall’s extracurricular activities, you may be seeking ways to get the family out of the house! Luckily, there are several destinations that are perfect for a day trip out of town that are just a short car ride away. Before heading out to one of these locations, double-check their operation hours as they may have changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Drive to Bruneau Sand Dunes

Does dune skiing sound like fun? This state park is about 65 miles south of Boise and there is plenty to do! Here you’ll find North America’s largest free-standing sand dune, reaching over 470 feet. Rent a sad board or just take in the views of wildlife and the scenery.

Visit Idaho City

Once the state capital, you’ll find the Wild West’s memory alive and well only an hour away from Boise. Enjoy the rustic downtown area with its antique shops and restaurants.  Visit The Springs – a recently developed natural hot spring where you can unwind from the week’s stresses!

Walk the Trails at Bogus Basin

Drive 45 minutes from downtown Boise to take in some of the best views of the valley! The trails are usually open June – October and offer up to 30 miles of elevation for those hikers who want a challenge. Or, take the lift up the mountain – it might be a little faster! During the warm months, enjoy disc golf, horseback riding, and tubing! Bogus Basin is also home to Idaho’s only mountain coaster!

Visit McCall

This resort town offers boating, sandy beaches, and beautiful scenery! If you’re into spending time on the water, this is the perfect place to rent a boat for the day. Just two hours north of Boise, McCall is a great place to take out your ATVs or other off-road vehicles. If you’re looking for new places to hunt, McCall is a great place to set up camp while hunting for bear, deer, elk, turkey, or waterfowl.

Stay at a Resort for the Weekend

Silver Creek Plunge is two hours from Boise and located inside the Boise National Forest. Enjoy time surrounded by mountains, wildlife, and Silver Creek which runs right through the property. Stay in a cabin, bring your tent or RV, and enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, and outdoor recreational opportunities.

If you’re seeking fun and adventure outside of the Boise city limits, Idaho offers plenty for you and your family to enjoy! If you’re looking for a day trip or a weekend away, these locations are definitely memorable. Enjoy a short getaway from Boise and make some great memories!
